Why he matters

Ephrem taught theology through poetry. His hymns gave ordinary believers a way to sing doctrine, repentance, and love for Christ into memory.

His importance reaches beyond one church. Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and many Protestants still read him as one of the great voices of early Christianity.

Feast and gift timing

In many Syriac Orthodox calendars his commemoration is tied to the early weeks of Great Lent. That makes the weeks before Lent the strongest moment for Ephrem name-day gifts, choir gifts, and gifts for teachers of the faith.
